Cosmic Education:
Exploring the Interconnectedness of Our World
Following AMI guidelines, The Mosaic Field School’s elementary program builds knowledge through self-construction as children engage in an in-depth study of the world and how it works.
Our lessons seamlessly integrate across disciplines—including geography, biology, history, language, mathematics, science, music, and art—all presented as Cosmic Education. Children practice these lessons collaboratively during uninterrupted work cycles, fostering a deep sense of connection to humanity and igniting their natural desire to contribute to the world.
Our teaching method honors each child's uniqueness, encouraging creativity, imagination, and problem-solving within a precise, supportive framework.

Mosaic Montessori Elementary teaches language by engaging both the intellect and imagination. This approach explores the evolution of language and writing, complemented by thorough word studies that enhance vocabulary understanding. Children participate in spelling and grammar activities using Montessori materials, which help them analyze sentence structures ranging from simple to complex.
As children develop their writing skills, they progress from crafting short stories to composing structured paragraphs, improving their ability to express thoughts clearly and creatively. The curriculum also includes the appreciation and critique of literature, deepening students' understanding of style and narrative development, and ultimately fostering a lifelong love for reading and writing.
-
Math:
Mosaic’s Montessori elementary mathematics curriculum emphasizes a deep understanding of numbers and their relationships. It begins with the story of numbers, progressing from whole numbers to fractions and decimals. In addition as the children move through their elementary experience they introduce advanced concepts such as squares, cubes, and signed numbers. Measurement activities apply mathematical concepts to real-world situations, and students explore number bases beyond base 10. This holistic approach fosters both skills and conceptual understanding in mathematics.
Geometry:
In Geometry, specific contributions include concepts such as equality, similarity, and equivalence; exploration of constructive triangles; a study of polygons, as well as circles, angles, and lines in detail; equivalence of plane figures; area and related formulas; and volume calculations alongside formulas for volume.

Montessori education for elementary children incorporates the concept of Cosmic Education. This approach enables children to learn about fundamental principles of the universe while also fostering a deep appreciation for the interconnectedness of all life on Earth and our place within the cosmos.
Cosmic Education encourages children to explore how the Earth's tilt, rotation, and orbit around the sun create the seasons. These seasonal changes in light and weather impact plant growth and animal migration, which are essential for human life.
Historically, accurately predicting the seasons was crucial for early developments in mathematics and geometry. This knowledge led to advancements in timekeeping and calendar creation. Additionally, the variation in resources across different regions stimulated trade, which in turn necessitated record-keeping and the establishment of writing systems.
Through Cosmic Education, children develop a richer understanding of the interconnectedness of all living things and our position in the universe, sparking their curiosity and nurturing a passion for learning about the world around them.

Adventure Awaits:
Our Outdoor Program & “Going Outs”
At The Mosaic Field School, learning truly spills beyond the classroom walls.
-
Our unique Outdoor Program immerses children in the vibrant symphony of nature, fostering a deep appreciation for the natural world and igniting a passion for exploration and environmental stewardship. Weekly lessons delve into gardening, hiking, bird watching, plant propagation, and more, maintaining our beautiful community garden.
-
A cornerstone of the elementary experience is our “Going Outs” program. Students actively plan and execute trips beyond the classroom, transforming theoretical knowledge into real-life understanding. From regular visits to local grocery stores to excursions related to their projects (like libraries, planetariums, or botanical gardens), children gain invaluable real-life knowledge from community resources.
-
Throughout the year, our students have the opportunity to attend various overnight trips to inspiring destinations like Nature's Classroom in Alabama or Jekyll Island 4-H Center. Other student-planned adventures for our guides’ elementary classrooms in the past have included destinations such as St. Croix, Tybee Island, Savannah, and Williamsburg, fostering independence, planning skills, and unforgettable memories. We look forward to what our elementary children imagine and plan for our inaugural year at Suwanee Station!

“Our aim therefore is not merely to make the child understand, and still less to force him to memorize, but so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his inmost core.”
-Maria Montessori

Our Foundational Principles:
The Mosaic Field School Difference

Montessori education is increasingly supported by academic research. Studies consistently show that Montessori students tend to outperform their peers in traditional schools in areas like academic achievement, creativity, and social-emotional development. A comprehensive 2023 review by the Campbell Collaboration, for instance, found Montessori students excelled in reading, math, and science, while also demonstrating greater creativity and social-emotional skills. This evidence underscores the profound benefits of our child-centered, hands-on approach.
